Who we are

Owt for Nowt is an independent editorial blog about money-saving tips, freebies and thrifty living. We are not a company, bank, broker, or regulated financial services provider.

What we collect (anonymous only)

When you accept analytics cookies, we collect:

• Anonymous visitor ID — a random identifier stored in your browser (localStorage) so we can group page views from the same device without knowing who you are.
• Session ID — a random ID for your current visit (sessionStorage), reset when you close the browser tab.
• Pages viewed — which blog pages you open and basic navigation paths.
• Scroll depth — whether you scrolled roughly 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% down a page.
• Device & browser (coarse) — e.g. mobile/desktop platform and browser family from your user-agent string. We do not fingerprint you.
• Campaign tags — standard UTM parameters in the URL (e.g. utm_source) if you arrived via a tagged link.
• Timestamps — when events occurred (date/time, UK-relevant processing).

What we do not collect

• Names, email addresses, or account profiles (no public sign-up)
• Payment or financial details
• Precise location or IP address stored against your visit
• Advertising profiles or cross-site tracking

Lawful basis

Anonymous analytics runs on your consent, given via the cookie banner. If you choose "No thanks", we do not load analytics storage or send events. Essential operation of the blog (serving pages) does not require consent.

Retention

Analytics events are held in our pipeline for aggregate reporting and are not used to build individual profiles. Browser-side IDs persist until you clear site data or withdraw consent.

Processors

• Amazon Web Services — hosting and content delivery (EU regions where configured)
• Internal session analytics service — anonymous event ingestion only

We do not sell or rent data to advertisers or data brokers.

Your choices & rights

You can refuse analytics via the cookie banner, clear cookies in your browser, or block storage in browser settings. Under UK GDPR you may ask what we hold — for anonymous IDs we may not be able to link data back to you. Contact details are on our About page.
